About
Horne’s opened in Port Royal in 1960 as a single family-owned restaurant on A.P. Hill Boulevard. It grew into a chain of more than 60 locations — and the Port Royal original is the only one still thriving. Same building, same roadside welcome.
The story starts earlier. Bob Horne founded the first store on October 4, 1948, selling candies, nuts and souvenirs to travelers. By 1956 the chain had reached 17 locations across 8 states — the year Mr. Horne began painting the roofs yellow. By 1963 it had grown to 44 units, and by 1965 there were 60 Horne’s locations, many on major highways and open 24 hours a day. The last company-owned store closed in 1982. Port Royal is the last of the line, and still features many of the original designs.
Today it is three businesses under one roof: a full-service restaurant, a convenience store with gasoline and propane filling, and a gift shop stacked with old-time and specialty candies, gourmet chocolates, and fresh-baked cookies, brownies, cakes and pies.
